2007/1/19 Problem Caused by Device Driver is easy to fixA Device Driver is just the software used to bridge the Operating System (Windows). With the device you’re installing. This Software just tells the device how to interact with the operating system. Device Drivers are updated frequently, usually as errors are found. That's why getting the latest driver from there website is best. When installing a device, it’s preferable to just install the driver and not running the setup program. Wireless products run much more efficiently using there driver and not there setup program. The Devices setup program usually carries a wireless connection utility that ALL WindowsXP & Vista users should not run. The Wireless Utillity by the device manufacturers may record your internet surfing habits or worse. Verizon, Bright House & Knologys Disks carry a connection program called Motive Smart Bridge. This software Delivers Ads & Spy ware to your PC. Rarely do you need the ISP’s software. All Microsoft Operating Systems have an automatic connection (DHCP Client) service. Plug your Internet connection into your computer and it should Automatically Connect. Dialup is a little different.
2007/1/14 PayPal is NOT SECURE!!!!!Strange things are happening at PayPal, Watch out. PayPal has accused two of my clients of fraud in two weeks. These clients were NOT doing anything fraudulent, but paying there bill. Today 1-13-07 PayPal is telling me I need to re sign with a new e-mail address. I’ve been with PayPal 4 years and have a 100% satisfaction rating. PayPal is saying these is a known issue, and hope to rectify this before the next coming of Christ. They are now holding hundreds of Dollars of mine with no explanation. PayPal claims they can hold payments 6 months if they want to. I figure PayPal is getting thousands of dollars in interest by pulling this on millions of customers. I’m now been on hold for over an hour waiting for customer service agent. There not agents, just India’s folks earning .23 Cents an hour. PayPal wants my company to sign up for a Virtual Terminal so these problems will stop. PayPal wants $25 a month to properly run credit cards plus there 4% fee on top of that. PayPal is just a SHITTY Company. Google has an alternative, there starting a payment service. From what I’m hearing there’s NO CHARGE the first year. Boy I like that. I‘ve been begging for a Payment Service Alternative, and Google has come to my rescue. Google: Get a Phone Number so potential clients can contact you. More on PayPal Sucks: http://www.paypalsucks.com/ 2007/1/8 Do you remember going from Windows 95 to 98? QuickBooks is still like Win95 Vistas like in another planetI’m teching a QuickBooks job. Actually 2 of them, one successfully the other I’m not sure. When the QuickBooks Tech Bulletin reads “There looking into possible fixes for this bug” and it was dated 2 months ago I get worried. Windows 95 was a lot like that. Buggy and not a fun experience to deal with. With Windows XP were so spoiled, plug something in; device manager may actually install the proper driver. I installed a Windows XP 64 bit; the stock driver for the wireless card came from the Internet. My device was recognized, and the proper 64bit driver was installed. I wonder how QuickBooks will survive, so many stupid bugs. The consumers know good computing, they won’t accept anything less. Microsoft really has grown and generally has real good products that I’m proud to work with. I’m really spoiled, something goes past me, and I contact my Microsoft Engineers who’ll normally find a fix.
Note to everyone running QuickBooks, Microsoft has an Accounting program that’s much better. Microsoft’s Small Business Accounting sells for a more reasonable price than QuickBooks & I can tech it by Proxy if needed... 2007/1/6 Mission Critical gets Routine
Mid City Glass calls at Noon with a big problem. Laptop Server has crashed, Register is down and databases are unavailable. Brad brings the present server, We Ghost it over to a New & Bigger Drive, and at 3:30 (3 1/2 hours) later, register is working, database is once again working.
9:00 AM next Day a new full size server with ample scalability and redundancy is delivered using a copy of the first server. No need to reload ANYTHING, all programs retained on the 2nd Ghost. The Business now has a Server and a Backup Server. Because the business owner didn’t attempt to continue running the damaged server, all data was saved.
2007/1/2 Windows Defender has got a Bug!
Theres a problem with Windows Defender(01-02-07). Right now going to http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx and reloading the defender is the fix. Microsoft just got the Idea after many calls and will have a fix out soon. Don’t worry if Windows Defender is not working for a couple days. I still recommend updating your computers, just like I’ve recommended to Microsoft to TEST there updates before they are released.
Tip: NEVER Load Microsofts Video Driver Updates. Out of 100 I've installed, 98 I had to uninstall because they did not work correctly.
Remember one thing, The Computer Industry is very young. Given another decade or two, Computing will have the same quality of new cars. It was'nt to long ago that a car maybe lasted 10 years at best. As much crap as I give Microsoft, They are the BEST thing out there. Linux & Apple scare the heck out of me from a security stand point. XP is secure, Vista is maybe Security over kill, you'll be the judge,"user". That's a inside joke because with Vista, Your rarley the Administrator.
DeFrag, DeFrag, DeFragDefrag, Defragging, shuffling the HD, are all terms for drfragmentating your Hard Drive. Ever since the early days of 640 mg Hard Drives we’ve been told to defrag the hard drive. The computer works by quickly loading files from the Hard Drive to either Ram or Cache. The longer the hard drive (Seeks) the data the more the latency. By putting data close together and in the same general area, your seek times go down and basically your computer runs much faster. In the early days having a couple thousand files was the norm. With most home computers approaching 1/3 or ½ a million files, Seek times can be significantly longer.
There are many benefits with defragging, and Hard Drive Longevity is another one. I regularly see 6 month to 1 year old hard drives fail because they were never defragged. Since the head moves up to 99% less on a highly defragmented hard drive, you get an idea of how beneficial defragging your hard drive is.
My clients hear it, and most abide by these three tasks every week. Defrag your hard drive, Run a Viral Scan, Run a Windows Defender Scan (Full). If you do these three things weekly, your computer will run faster, last longer, and be much safer. |
